Ravens' favorite

The logitech vantage playstation headset. Usually runs about $30. USB connection, Mono sound and its comfortable with an adjustable headband and mic boom. I like that it allows me to play the voice program sounds through it and leave the game sounds to the speakers. Mono headset means I dont cut myself off from the outside world too. Its cheap, effective, and has good sound quality and clarity.
Probably the best bargain headset I have ever used so I always go back.

By contrast, I always use the two bullet-jack headsets with two ear-cups.

Compared to the headset Raven advocates above:
Advantages:
- no drivers to load,
- no processor footprint (any attachment that has drivers uses up some of your CPU time),
- dedicated input jacks (hardware managed sound means no sound buffers - no memory footprint).
Disadvantages:
- no sound-channeling (you can't send VoIP to the headset while the game plays on the main speakers)
- bulkier (Generally speaking.)
- covers both ears (this is not a problem for me as my headset allows ambient sound in without restriction)
- more expensive (stereo sound means stereo price)
- less convenient to connect (bullet-jacks require two connections and may be in the back of the comp)

On my 6 year old laptop, processor power is at a premium; I don't want anything eating up my processor time that I don't absolutely need. The driver-free thing matters here.

People with a desktop bought in the last 3 years or a laptop bought in the last year or so should not concern themselves with this issue. If your machine was designed for gaming, you can safely go back even older. If this is you, the PS2/PS3 thing is probably your best choice.

There are other things you may want to consider: light weight, money you are willing to spend, etc. etc.

This will be very useful to me soon, I should have enough saved for a new laptop within the next month and I'll need a better headset for it (: thanks for posting
